Internationally renowned pipa player and Carlsbad resident Wu Man joins Son de San Diego to present When China Meets Latin America. Part of the prestigious Creative Catalyst Fund sponsored by the San Diego Foundation, the project explores cross-cultural exchanges between Chinese pipa and Latin American plucking instruments, resulting in a musical dialogue between these two diverse communities. Through rehearsals, workshops, and performances, Wu Man and Son de San Diego discover and share the unique collaboration they have forged between the musical traditions of China and Latin America.

“We have found common ground in love songs, silvery dawns, birdsongs, broken hearts, tales of sailing, and the sheer joy of dancing,” Eduardo Garcia, from Son de San Diego, explains. “This has proven to me once more the universality without borders that music is.”

This residency has been made possible through the prestigious grant as part of the San Diego Foundation’s Creative Catalyst Fund – Individual Artist Fellowship Program awarded to Wu Man by the San Diego Charitable Foundation.

Recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and as a leading ambassador of Chinese music, US-based, Chinese-born musician Wu Man has carved out a career creating and fostering projects that give this ancient instrument a new role in today’s music world, not only introducing the instrument to new audiences, but commissioning and premiering over a hundred new works to grow the core repertoire.

Son de San Diego plays music from the southern region of Veracruz state in Mexico known as Son Jarocho. They use traditional string instruments (jarana, guitarra de son and tarima). The best-known song from this tradition is “La Bamba.”

The Creative Catalyst Fund supports the creation and development of new work conceived by San Diego-based professional artists and focused on creating opportunities for civic engagement or advancing social change through arts and culture.
