Caroline Shaw, composer, violinist and singer
Pulitzer Prize winner and vocalist in Roomful of Teeth

This past spring, 30 year-old composer, violinist and singer won the Pulitzer Prize in music for her composition “Partita” for the vocal group Roomful of Teeth of which she is a member. She is the youngest winner ever and one of the few female winners. This led to a flurry of press activity including profiles in the New York Times and on NPR’s All Things Considered.

“Partita” is based text from Sol Lewitt’s wall drawings and baroque dance forms and was released on New Amsterdam Records both as a “Partita” EP and on Roomful of Teeth’s self-titled debut album (click those links to listen for free).

Caroline Shaw and Roomful of Teeth will be performing three times over the Festival weekend with a headlining performance on Saturday night:

This is the California debut of Roomful of Teeth and is not to be missed!

Founded in 2009 by Brad Wells, Roomful of Teeth is a vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from non-classical traditions the world over, the eight voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an on-going commissioning project, invites today’s brightest composers to create a repertoire without borders.

Roomful of Teeth (including Shaw) will be performing “Partita” in its entirety across their two performances on Saturday, September 21. Also on these concerts will be pieces written for Roomful by some of today most interesting composers including Missy Mazzoli, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Rinde Eckert, Judd Greenstein, William Brittelle, Caleb Burhans and Sarah Kirkland Snider.

Shaw will also be joining other members of Roomful of Teeth, Jeff Gavett and Esteli Gomez, for a performance of smaller ensemble works on Sunday, September 22 including the premiere of a new solo piece by Shaw for voice, violin and electronics.
