Bio:
Violinist Johnny Gandelsman, a cofounder of Brooklyn Rider and a member of Silk Road Ensemble, is used to playing music of many different styles—folk, jazz, contemporary, classical. In the Bach Sonatas and Partitas, he returns to his roots for the epic undertaking of a complete performance of one of masterpieces of the solo repertoire. His vast experience playing in so many genres pays huge dividends: this is music-making that feels both intensely new and satisfyingly old. The dance movements really do leap off the bow as his folk playing comes to the fore. His new recording of this work made its debut at the top of Billboard's traditional classical music chart.
